Prepare for Art Visit with Valerie Corvin.

Artist Valerie Corvin lives and works in Piedmont, California.

Valerie Corvin is an American contemporary abstract painter working in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Her works are distinct and elegant and are inspired by natural forms and shapes.  She believes that nature provides the greatest inspiration and works to recreate the feelings of joy, awe, and beauty one finds in nature.

Corvin has found that the creative process is a combination of observation and intuition.  Her artworks use the unique organic shapes and marks she discovers from a walk-in nature - rock formations in the mountains, the shape of a melting snow patch, a grouping of trees on a hillside, erosion of the earth on a hiking trail, or an aerial view of the landscape. These are forms and lines are starting points for the visual representation of the wonders of nature.  Intuition lies in the use of contrasting, unusual organic shapes with enticing lines to punctuate the composition. Her many layers of paint, intertwined gestural marks and fields of color create a sense of excitement, beauty, and energy. A self-proclaimed colorist, Valerie’s sense of and love of color carries an emotional impact and helps her communicate her deeper feelings in her works. One can feel Valerie’s love of painting.

Corvin holds a Master of Arts, Museum Administration and worked for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as a museum educator. She began painting twenty years ago, studying fine art at the California College of the Arts and with numerous Bay Area painting teachers. Drawn to fine arts from her family background, both parents are artists, her dad an international award-winning designer of fine jewelry and her mother a painter and sculptor.

She used her museum administration background to be a founder of an arts center in her community, the Piedmont Center for the Arts, and managed the visual arts program for eight years.  Promoting and creating opportunities for fellow emerging artists is a passion and Corvin is the founder and administrator of a juried art competition exhibition now in its seventh year. In addition, Corvin is very proud to be a Trustee of the Board ofDirectors at the Oakland Museum of California for more than 8 years now.

I see painting as an exciting process of taking inspiration from nature and combining it with my personal feelings. I believe abstract paintings need to emit an energy from the painter’s inner life. Excitement, wonder, joy for the natural world and how it resounds within me can be seen and felt in my mixed media works. The process emit colors, shapes, and marks that vibrate within the viewer and evoke feelings of beauty, connection, and something inexplicable within themselves. Color is a strength of mine. I love playing with color and building colorful palettes to express part of my deeper emotions.  But playfulness and spontaneity are also important elements to my process. Building layers of marks, first bold dark marks, then followed by colorful shapes and a variety of lines to create a sense of history and a composition that communicates a sense of natural and unique forms from nature. The ultimate outcome of my process are artworks that give the viewer feelings that uplift and resound.  And even might remind one of the deeper sense of connection we all have to the earth on which we stand.
